Wipro recognised as first Bluetooth test facility in India

Global software major Wipro Technologies has been recognised as India's first Bluetooth qualification test facility by the Bluetooth trade association, the IT bellwether said late Tuesday.

Bluetooth is an open wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances (using short length radio waves) from fixed and mobile devices, creating personal area networks (PANs) with high levels of security.

The recognition makes Wipro competent to perform Bluetooth qualification conformance or compliance tests, the company said in a statement here.

"We will test products submitted by members of the Bluetooth special interest group at our test lab in the electronics city campus. The tests will also include Bluetooth protocol conformance," said Wipro vice-president C.P. Gangadharaiah.

Bluetooth qualification is the certification process required for any product using Bluetooth wireless technology and a pre-condition of the intellectual property (IP) license for Bluetooth technology.

"India is known for its strong software expert pool. Many profiles and protocol stacks of Bluetooth-enabled products were developed in India. This market is influential in the Bluetooth original equipment manufacturer (OEM) automotive market and in the Bluetooth mobile advertising," Bluetooth chief technology officer Andy Glass said in the statement.

Bluetooth technology has expanded beyond headset and mobile phone applications to high-growth market segments, including health and fitness and gaming.

"Gaming is the second largest application in terms of Bluetooth shipments. About 1,000 new Bluetooth enabled product designs were evolved and over 3,000 Bluetooth enabled products were tested and qualified in 2009," Glass added.

Air is the answer to power woes in Bangalore

A management graduate from Bangalore is all set to do an SRK from Swades for real.

Nanjundaiah K, a management student, plans to provide uninterrupted power supply to his village using air power instead of electricity.

After designing city's first phoenix air engine car, he plans lighting his village using the same technology.

"Preparations are on to light up my village using this technology," said Nanjundaiah. "The technology has proven handy in making of my dream car. I hope to repeat the same on a larger scale."

Despite being from a poor background, it was his keen interest, which led him to design the car.

The experiment

Nanjundaiah, who recently showcased city's first ever air- powered vehicles a car, a motorcycle and an auto, has bigger plans.

The III semester student from Gupta College of Management and Technology hails from MG Palya of Ramnagar district near Bangalore, and plans to solve his village's load shedding woes using the same technology to ensure an uninterrupted 24-hour power supply.

"We suffer a consistent power crisis in our village, even though we are just a few kilometers away from the state capital," added Nanjundaiah. "I want to change all that."

The technology

Nanjundaiah created the engine out of scrap materials. The 8 horse power engine that converts compressed air into energy is capable of producing electricity that can light 25 houses, if fitted with a dynamo.

The setup is to be materialised in the next four months.

Nanjundaiah, who is yet to apply for a patent, has sought help from various authorities before he starts his new venture.

"We helped him assemble his car," said S Revanna, proprietor, Siddeshwara Engineering Works. "He came with a concept, but had no capital.

If his car is developed, it can be on par with the existing ones." A few have agreed to help him as well.

"He has approached me for help. Considering the efforts he has put in, we will certainly find ways to help him," said SK Natraj, Mayor, BBMP.
